Elect Eoin O’Dwyer in Vancouver-West End!

Eoin O'Dwyer in Vancouver's West End with the laughing statues behind him.

So with the BC Provincial election coming up on October 19th, 2024, I decided to run for the BC Greens in my riding of Vancouver-West End! I’ve been involved with the BC Greens for several years now, because they’re the only party that’s willing to treat the climate crisis with the urgency it requires.

Why Vote for Me?

If the BC Greens being the only party continuing to uphold progressive values isn’t enough of a reason to vote for me, here’s two others:

  • I actually live in the riding. Both the NDP incumbent and the BC Conservatives nominee live outside. In March, Spencer Chandra Herbert’s primary residence was listed as in Victoria, although he has since moved back to Vancouver (although not inside the riding). There’s some reporting on this from last year if you’d like to know more. The BC Conservatives candidate, Jon Ellacott, resides in Burnaby.
  • I’m a renter and not a landlord or property owner. Since the West End is a community of renters, I think that having someone who reflects the community is important for whoever represents us in the legislature.

And if you’re worried about vote splitting, Spencer Chandra Herbert got 62.31% of the vote last time. You can vote the way your heart tells you to!

Why Am I Running?

I’m running because my rent would go up by a thousand dollars if I moved, because my mom is thinking about moving back to Ireland to get healthcare, and so I can look my nieces in the eye when they grow up and say I did everything I could to make this world liveable for them.

We’ve got big problems here in BC, but we have the solutions to fix them. The current government just lacks the will to make them happen.

Who Is This Eoin Fellow Anyway?

I’ve lived in the West End for nearly 10 years. I’m a renter and a web developer. Before that, I studied physics at UBC and got my masters from Queen’s University where I got to work on a dark matter experiment. I’m passionate about housing policy and firmly believe that density is green. Reading Happy City was a real eye opener to me about how we can change our cities to both save the planet and make our lives better. In short, I’d like to see the rest of Vancouver be a lot more like the West End. Which is the Best End, in my humble opinion. The only thing we lack is a SkyTrain station this side of Burrard.

What Am I Fighting For?

Affordable Housing

We need to invest in non-market housing to solve this housing crisis for everyone.

The BC Greens want to build 26,000 units of affordable non-market rentals every year in collaboration with co-ops and non-profits. We also want to put in place vacancy controls to keep existing units affordable.

2SLGBTQIA+ Rights

We need a ban on conversion therapy and to protect access to gender affirming care, especially with the rise in anti-SOGI rhetoric from the BC Conservatives.

Public Healthcare

We need to protect our public healthcare system from privatization and expand access to family and mental healthcare.

Public Transit

We must ensure that TransLink is properly funded to protect the service we currently have. On top of this, the BC Greens want to make transit fast, frequent, and free by increasing our investment in transit. The primary focus—as anyone who has been stuck on the 5/6 knows—has to be fast and frequent.

Real Action on the Climate Crisis

We need a government that takes the climate crisis seriously. We need to prohibit new fracking and LNG projects, improve the carbon tax by making big polluters pay their fair share and increasing rebates to individuals and communities, and invest in the green economy to create good, well paying jobs.
